Love Tenderly
Can we inherit trauma over generations? This is the question posed by Norwegian Vietnamese dancer and choreographer Tony Tran. In Love Tenderly, he goes on a voyage of discovery through his family history, not least in his fathers’ experiences of prison camp and refugee life. But it’s also about growing up in an environment where identity is said to not matter, while at the same time struggling to fit in. Here, Tony uses his own upbringing as a homosexual boy in Norway, in a catholic family hailing from Vietnam, as the starting point. The performance becomes a story of trauma as a transformative power and about bringing your body to share what it carries. Gradually, a universal story about emancipation emerges: who am I? And if I am, how many am I then?

About the choreographer
Tony Tran is educated at Kunsthøgskolen in Oslo and at Den Danske Scenekunstskolen in Copenhagen. In his work, he has often focused on masculinity, especially how it’s communicated as a bodily language and a constructed, inherited identity. His works have toured in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America. Tran has also been artistic advisor for the festival Lyse Netter and a member of Dansens Hus Oslo’s artistic advisory board.
